Normal batteries are Absolutely useless in cameras. ( even Duracell )
You need special rechargeable batteries.
Go to Dixon's with your camera, they will tell you what you need.
Do I have to have a "L" series lens for a Canon 5d digital camera?

Take it back to the store with your receipt. They will look into the problem or replace it for you, as it is still under the first year guarantee.

i had a lot of problems like this.
1, if the flash/flash comacitor is damaged it will drain the battery in a few seconds/minutes.
2 if you are using those rechargable batteries, they will run out fast, you will possibly get about 4-15 pictures out of a fully charged set.
personally, if it's new, i would take/send it back, since it's still under warrenty, and the quicker you report a problem the better.
